Things To Do In Paris – #2 Night Life

Things To Do In Paris – #2 Night Life

Of all the things to do in Paris, night time crawling is my number 2 choice. Paris is justly famous for its nightlife. You can find almost anything in Paris - from the elegance of the opera to a cruise by candlelight on the Seine, from an intimate club or the sleaze of the Pigalle's red light district.

Paris cabarets and revues

Paris cabarets and revues

Moulin Rouge; Crazy Horse; Lido; Le Paradis Latin - these world famous cabaret shows are a major Paris tourist attraction. They're not cheap but there's no denying the appeal for many.

The Moulin Rouge, in Pigalle on boulevard de Clichy, is all about grand spectacle with 100 artists and the revue featuring the 'cancan'. The Crazy Horse, near Place de l'Alma, claims it's the 'Art of the Nude' and to deliver the most sensual striptease imaginable!

The Lido de Paris in the Champs-Elysées is one of the most famous cabaret shows in the world, offering a whirlwind of sequins, feathers and glamour featuring the Bluebell Girls. Le Paradis Latin in the Latin Quarter calls itself the Grand Dame of Cabaret and is in a theatre built by Gustave Eiffel in 1889.

Paris theatre

Paris has a wonderful array of theatres, although many performances will require a good understanding of French - the musical is not as prominent as it is in London. The Odéon Théatre de l'Europe does specialise in plays from other countries - in their original language.

The Comédie Française, on Place Collette, just off the Rue de Rivoli, is the city's most famous theatre, performing classical drama and contemporary works.

Paris opera and dance

The Opéra de Paris Bastille opened in 1989 and is now home to the national opera company. The original opera house, Opéra Garnier, the classic building designed by Charles Garnier, focuses more on ballet since the Bastille building opened. Home to the Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris, it's also worth visiting for the sumptuous architecture and the Chagal ceiling.

Paris music

The main Paris concert hall is the Salle Pleyel, a 2,300-seat classical music venue. Rock and international acts tend to be at the Palais Omnisport Paris-Bercy or the Zénith. The Olympia also has a fine reputation and is more intimate in size.

Parisians are crazy about jazz and there's a wide range of clubs boasting quality performances from notable jazz artists. Check the listings in the likes of Pariscope or, in English, The City, for details.

Paris cinema

Paris is one of the few cities with a vibrant domestic film industry as well as the normal international blockbusters. V.O. means the film is in its original soundtrack while V.F. is for films that have been dubbed in French. Domestic productions are, naturally, in French.
